What type of facility this is

Immigration detention centers hold foreign nationals administratively, not as a criminal penalty, while their immigration status or removal is being resolved. They are not equivalent to a prison: their regime, time limits and the rights of the people held depend on each country's immigration law.

In the United Kingdom, prisons are run by HM Prison and Probation Service (England and Wales), the Scottish Prison Service and the Northern Ireland Prison Service.

Knowing the category helps you understand what to expect: the regime, who may visit and the procedures that apply vary depending on the type of facility and the country.
